CURRICULUM NEWS

Religion

In Religion this term we will be focusing on the strand Sacred Texts.  We are concentrating on the Bible, with a focus on the four Gospels.

Science

In Science this term we will be exploring the concept of heat production. Specifically, we will focus on the effect of heat on a variety of materials.

History / Geography

In History this term we are looking at different climate zones around the world. The children will be making comparisons between climatic differences, customs and Christmas traditions.

English

We are focussing on procedural texts this term and will also be incorporating this genre in Science. The comprehension strategies that will be covered this term are Inferring, Finding the Main Idea and Summarizing.

Maths

Subtraction with regrouping will be further explored this term. There will be a particular focus on the Measurement and Geometry strand, including 3D shapes, mass, volume and length. Consolidation in counting money and reading and recording time will continue. Students will continue to learn the relationship between multiplication and division. Regular practice of recalling multiplication facts is needed.

Homework

It is very important that your child learns their spelling and times tables. Again, we ask you to test your child every Thursday night on spelling and times tables. This can be recorded in Thursday’s column and marked by an adult. A great strategy to improve their understanding is to ask the spelling words out of order as well as the times tables.

Swimming

In week 4, the Year 3 students will begin their swimming lessons. Please ensure they have the following for each lesson:

  • Swimming cap – these can be purchased from the school office for $2.50
  • Swimmers (one-piece for the girls)
  • T-shirt
  • Footwear (e.g. Thongs)
  • Towel
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s class teacher for an appointment time.  We are often very busy before and after school so prior arrangement of a time to meet does help us to manage out time more effectively.  The best ways to contact us are through email, the office or a note via your child.

Have a wonderful term.

Week 8

Wow, what a busy term it has been!

The Year Three students had a great time on their excursion on Friday. They were lucky to attend mass at St Stephen's Cathedral and then be given a guided tour of the Cathedral, learning about the history. Afterwards the children were taken to Calamvale District Park to have playtime.

A reminder that our class is leading mass in the Church this week. Mass will begin at 9am sharp. It would be wonderful to have you there with us.

As we work towards the end of term it is important that your child not miss vital classroom time. Of course, if they are unwell I encourage you to keep them home to prevent spreading disease further.

Showcase night will be held on the Wednesday of Week 10 (16th September) and you will be able to collect your child’s portfolio’s then also. This is a great opportunity for you to witness some of the amazing work samples your child has produced this term.

I look forward to seeing you then,
Mandy.

In History this term we are looking at the concept of Community and Remembrance, focusing on Life in the 1800 to 1900s.  Students will discover what life was like for a child in the past and compare it to their lives today.

English

We are focussing on Diary Writing this term and will also be incorporating this genre in History. It would be beneficial to your child if they regularly wrote in a personal diary at home, recording their thoughts and feelings about their day. The comprehension strategies that will be covered this term are Inferring, Finding the Main Idea and Summarizing. We will also be learning about different types of verbs.

Maths

Subtraction with regrouping will be introduced this term. Consolidation in counting money and reading and recording time will continue. Students will learn the relationship between multiplication and division. Regular practice of recalling multiplication facts is needed.

This can be recorded in Thursday’s column and marked by an adult. A great strategy to improve their understanding is to ask the spelling words out of order as well as the times tables.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s class teacher for an appointment time.  We are often very busy before and after school so prior arrangement of a time to meet does help us to manage out time more effectively.  The best ways to contact us are through email, the office or a note via your child.

Week 7

Welcome to week 7!

I cannot believe we are nearly half way through the year. The Year Three students have been very busy completing assessment tasks, as we come to the end of another term.

A reminder that Parent/Teacher interviews are being held next week. Interviews are being held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. You can book your interview online, or through the school office. There was some information in last weeks newsletter about resetting/obtaining your pin for the portal if you have forgotten it. Report cards and portfolios will be sent home in the last week.

A reminder to keep personal items, such as jumpers and hats, named. Some children are prone to losing their items on a daily basis, so naming items makes returns much more efficient.

See you next week,
Mandy.

Week 4

Welcome to Week 4!

As I'm sure you are aware, the Year 3 students will be sitting their NAPLAN tests this week. The tests will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings.
It is important that your child arrives to school on time. I have also reminded the children of the importance of having a healthy dinner, adequate breakfast and plenty of sleep so that they are ready for each test.

Due to NAPLAN taking place this week, the Year 3 teachers have decided NOT to give the children homework. The children will continue to change their home readers each day and are expected to still be reading for a minimum of 10-15 minutes each night.
If you have any questions about NAPLAN or homework this week, please feel free to send me an email. You can reach me at mandy.bland@bne.catholic.edu.au.

Have a great week,
Mandy.
